With ebola taking so many lives, it's easy to get overwhelmed by current events. And headlines often draw our attention away from ongoing global issues like hunger.

According to the World Food Programme, there are 805 million people on this planet who are hungry. To bring that number down and raise awareness of the campaign for zero hunger, the UN agency has proclaimed October 16 as World Food Day.

The voluntarily funded WFP sends foods to areas experiencing emergencies such as war, civil conflict, and natural disasters and keeps supplying it to help communities rebuild. It also supports school meal programs and, in keeping with this year's World Food Day theme, family farming.

More information about World Food Day, including ways to support the global movement and donate, can be found here.
